About this Hive: This premium hive is ready to go and has the capacity to accommodate your bees throughout the year, with room for honey if you get lucky. The hive has a double walled screened bottom board with sloped entrance and entrance reducer, two deep pine hive boxes for the brood chamber, and one medium pine honey super, a Vivaldi board with Vivaldi screen, and a cedar telescoping (outer) cover that is aluminum clad.
This hive comes with fully assembled wood frames installed with and wax coated plastic foundation. We use black foundation in the brood boxes to help you find eggs, and white foundation in the honey super.
Comments: The Vivaldi Board combination provides moisture management, insulation, and feeding options that are not available in a standard hive with an inner cover. We use them on all our own hives.
We always use screened bottom boards. They include a mite tray (sometimes called a sticky board) that provides a convenient way to count varroa mites without killing or disrupting the bees. It is less accurate than jar sampling methods, but can be done as often as you want to make up for the lower accuracy. Frequent sampling gives you a better sense of changes in mite infestation rate.
Foundationless Option: We also offer this hive with foundationless frames. This entails inserting a strip in the topbar groove and then waxing the strip. The bees build out this comb within the frame, normally starting under the topbar where the waxed strip is. This approach has the benefits of topbar beekeeping without the problems--an excellent compromise. We use a rough textured frame for this, as it encourages propolis and wax production.
